Michelle Williams To Star In “Cabaret”
Ever since Emma Stone withdrew from the upcoming Broadway revival of Kander and Ebb’s “Cabaret” three months ago, theatre lovers have been buzzing about who would replace her in the role of Sally Bowles, for which Liza Minnelli won an Oscar in 1973. I can now bring you the scoop — yeah, they are still working out a few details but it’s happening — that definitely this time Bowles will be played by Michelle Williams (pictured), a first-rate actor known to audiences from such movies as “Brokeback Mountain” and “My Week with Marilyn” and such television programs as “Dawson’s Creek.” (And, yes, all you knee-jerk skeptics, Williams can sing.) The “Cabaret” production to be revived was seen on Broadway from 1998 to 2004, and most of that time played the Roundabout Theatre’s Studio 54 space, where it will be seen again, with Alan Cumming returning in his triumphant, Tony-winning role as the MC. (The late and much-missed Natasha Richardson won a Tony for Sally.) The Roundabout has not officially announced Williams’s casting nor the dates for “Cabaret,” which will once again be directed by Sam Mendes, with Rob Marshall as co-director and choreographer. Previews will begin March 24. Can’t wait!
